Advent 4 – Featuring Mary and Elizabeth

This is one of my favourite Sundays – Elizabeth and Mary are the features of the scripture readings and music.

My first exposure to the extreme piety that sometimes surrounds Mary occurred on a “mission” trip to Mexico City a number of years ago. “Our Lady of Guadalupe”, an image associated with several apparitions of the Virgin Mary, has iconic status throughout Central America, especially among the peasant class and Indigenous folk. In the sixteenth century the Virgin is said to have appeared several times to the peasant, Juan Diego and communicated with him in his native Nahuatl language. The basilica that houses the venerated image set on a cloak associated with the appearances is the most visited shrine in the Roman Catholic world. My Lutheran friends and I joined the throngs of pilgrims on a moving pedway to catch our glimpse of the icon; there are far too many devotees to allow anything more than passing observance!

We Protestants find this sort of devotion and piety for Mary confusing, if not baffling. However, in recent times, Mary has captured more Lutheran attention as the first “witness”, shall we call her, to Jesus’ mission to “lift up the lowly, to fill the hungry with good things”. For Central American Catholics, Lutherans, and all Christians, Mary’s Song takes us to the heart of the gospel.

I hope you will enjoy the modern setting of the Annunciation/Magnificat that we will sing on Sunday from Holden Evening Prayer.

In January, Looking Ahead:

  • Book study – Begins January 7. See article below.

  • Games Day – Sunday, January 12, after our Service. Bring a favorite game. A light lunch will be served.

Stewardship Drive-Let’s Go Over the Top!

  • Thank you! We have received donations and pledges from about one-half of our 94 contributing individuals and families.

  • We hope that most of our membership will be able to contribute to our goal of raising $40,000 over and above regular offerings in order to retire our debt and so we can enjoy a fresh start to 2025. Working together we can do good things!

  • We will need significant donations from those who are able; we have received at least 26 gifts of $1,000 or more thus far. We are grateful for and honour donations of all sizes.

  • We currently have received approximately $36,000 toward our goal! Again, thank you for donations of all sizes! Help put us over the top!

Worship is at 9:30 am this Sunday!

ELCIC Weekly News Email
The following is the Weekly Wander: Announcements from the LSC, Bread of Life, Eastside United Church, and the Community
Offering information:
Financial Update: Bread of Life Lutheran Church (BoL) has a total balance owing of $40,000 for shared dues to Living Spirit Centre (LSC) as of September 2024; this includes utilities and building maintenance.
  • The 2023 year ended with a deficit of ~$10,000 plus $27,945 owing to LSC for 2023 shared dues.
  • Since then, BoL has paid $15,945 towards the 2023 debt and still owes $12,000 for 2023.
  • No payment has yet been made towards the 2024 shared dues of $28,000.
For other revenue and expenses, BoL reported a deficit of $12,721 for September 2024, though offering for September 29th was not included in this calculation. This is concerning as September is not a summer month, and there has been no ability to make payments toward the LSC balance owed. Expenses remain close to budget and BoL holds a bank balance of ~$1,700 if outstanding cheques/payments are cashed.

The following table is a year over year (YOY) comparison to show where BoL is year to date (YTD) as of September 30, 2024 compared to September 30, 2023. The comparison shows:
  • Revenue in 2024 is down by over $7,000 compared to 2023 for January to September.
  • Expenses in 2024 are up by over $5,000 compared to 2023 for January to September.

BOL YOY     SEPT 2023 YTD    SEPT 2024 YTD      Difference
Revenue       $140,288.00    $132,943.00     -$7,345.00
Expenses     $127,360.00    $132,736.00     $5,376.00
Profit     $12,928.00    $207.00     -$12,721.00

Please review your offering or review your monthly pre-authorized debit amount. Additional fundraising events will also be held, so please look forward to participating and attending!

We are looking for a few people who might like to get trained to help us out on Sunday mornings with getting the Worship out on Facebook/Internet.

1) Facebook Host - this is a relatively easy job of putting greetings/announcements/assisting note into the comments section of the Facebook feed during the worship time. Please connect with Brent or the Pastor if you would be willing.
2) Camera/Streaming host - this is a slightly more “techy” kind of work but the Bread of Life services are relatively straightforward. Let Pastor Stewart know if you would like to help out with this.

Request for Volunteer Snow Shovellers at the Living Spirit Centre!
In the previous few years, we have not had a lot of snow to shovel at the Living Spirit Centre and that has been a good thing. But during that time, our current volunteers have aged another few years. So if you are in good health and willing, please consider helping. After it snows about an inch or more, please bring your own shovel in case the building is not open to access the shovels inside. There are 8 doorways around the building that need to be cleared. When we receive a lot of snow, we hire a company to push it off the parking lot. Thank you so much for your consideration and help.
